Carice van Houten: The Dutch Actress Who Won Hearts with her Versatile Performances

 


Carice Anouk van Houten, the Dutch actress and singer, is known for her versatile acting skills and her ability to portray complex characters with ease. Born on September 5, 1976, in Leiderdorp, van Houten began her acting career in the late 1990s and quickly rose to fame in the Dutch film industry.


In 1999, she won the Golden Calf for Best Acting in a Television Drama for her first leading role in the television film Suzy Q.. She continued to showcase her acting prowess and won her second Golden Calf for Best Actress for Miss Minoes (2001).



In 2006, van Houten gained widespread recognition for her performance in Black Book, the most commercially successful Dutch film to date. Her portrayal of Rachel Stein won her the Golden Calf for Best Actress for the second time, and She was nominated by the Chicago Film Critics Association, the European Film Academy, the Online Film Critics Society, and the Online Film Critics Society. Paul Verhoeven, the director of Black Book, praised van Houten and said, "Never in my life have I worked with an actress this talented." The international press was also impressed with her performance.


Aside from Repo Men (2010), Black Death (2010), and Brimstone (2016), van Houten has also been recognized for her role in Valkyrie (2008), earning a nomination for the Best Supporting Actress Saturn Award.


Melisandre's portrayal in the HBO's show Game of Thrones from 2012 to 2019 brought her worldwide acclaim. Her performance as the mysterious priestess earned her nominations for the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series at the Screen Actors Guild Awards and the Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series at the Primetime Emmy Awards.




Van Houten's talent is not limited to acting alone. She is also an accomplished singer and has released two albums, See You on the Ice (2012) and Black Book Sessions (2018).


During an interview, van Houten disclosed that her inclination is towards performing scenes that require no dialogue. She grew up watching silent movies, and this has greatly impacted her acting approach. Her proficiency in expressing intricate emotions without using words is a proof of her acting skills.

Carice van Houten's personal life is notable as she comes from a family of performers. Her sister Jelka van Houten is also an actress, and her paternal grandmother had Scottish roots. Carice briefly attended the Maastricht Academy of Dramatic Arts before switching to the Kleinkunstacademie in Amsterdam to continue her professional education.

Van Houten is known for her dedication to her craft. She withdrew from a theatre production in 2006 due to personal reasons, which turned out to be a work overload. She takes her roles seriously and does not shy away from taking on challenging characters.
